He's probably best remembered by people of a certain age as the man who beat the likes of Wolf, Warrior and Shadow to claim the title of the first ever Gladiators Champion in the ITV
series of the 1990s. Clearly of sporting heritage, his athletic roots are certainly very strong.
A native East-Londoner, Weininger Irwin’s first taste of competitive sport was his primary school sports day which took place on what ironically was to become the site for the 2012 London Olympic Games. The low income housing (Lea View Flats), is where he spent most of his teenage years, would act as Weininger’s adventure playground where metal fences became hurdles, shed roofs obstacles and their circular perimeter his own personal velodrome.
This was clearly an excellent training ground, as Weininger was to become his secondary school’s top cross country runner and would often represent his house in athletics events and his school in the London Trials.
Weininger later moved to the USA where his interest in athletics continued.
He placed 20th in New York’s Queens Cross Country Championships out of 350 runners. His stint on the US collegiate athletics circuit with the New York Institute of Technology though fantastic, was to be short lived due to the pressures of college and work life.

Some years later and back on British soil, It was not long after this that ITV snapped him up for their first series of Gladiators, and his triumph over the forces of the celebrity gladiators (Wolfman, Saracen, Jet) is still a talking point to this day! Weininger’s passion and naturally affinity for sports and athletics were still strong. He competed in the British Indoor Rowing Championships attaining a respectable personal best of 6.28.8 in the 2,000 metres after going at 6.00min pace for the first 1300m. He also organised and captained team Caribbean Mixx, a group of friends and associates that competed in The Daily Telegraph Rover Dream Team Challenge, a national competition which gave participants the opportunity to compete against British Olympians (Jonathan Edwards, Audley Harrison James Cracknell etc).
The BBC however was most interested in his fitness Team (Caribbean Mixx) efforts and invited them to participate in the first ever series of BBC 1‘Are You Tough Enough (for the SAS)?’
